話題沸騰の『南京照相館』が北米で公開され、さきほどバンクーバー郊外の映画館で観てきました。南京大虐殺という、日本軍による残虐事件に巻き込まれた南京市民たちのヒューマンドラマです。
筆舌に尽くしがたい大規模な残虐行為の中で、絶望、怒り、愛、信頼、裏切り、希望――人間のあらゆる感情がぎっしり詰まった映画でした。映画館は満員で、若い人が目立っていました。たくさんの人が泣き、私も泣きました。終わったあと号泣している人もいました。見る人誰もが登場人物に入れ込み、感情移入する映画だと思います。
ヒューマニティの極限を演じきった主人公たち、そして日本軍人を演じた人たちの勇気をたたえます。特に、この物語の鍵を握る撮影担当の陸軍中尉を演じた若い俳優は、難しい役を見事に演じていました。ふつうの感覚を持っていた人間が、人間性を失っていく――その過程が鮮やかに描かれていました。
日本軍の残虐行為は、私が学んできた南京大虐殺の事実に照らすと、かなり抑制した表現になっており、視聴者の想像に委ねる部分が多くあります。それでもやはり大変衝撃的です。しかし、実際にあったことなので包み隠さず、バランスをよく考えて描かれていると思います。
子どもについては意見が分かれると思いますが、私は本人が関心を持ち、中学生以上であれば見ても良いと考えます。ただし、子どもに見せる場合は、親や教育者によるしっかりとした準備やフォローが必要です。大人であっても、それは同じかもしれません。これは広島・長崎の原爆を含む、戦争の残虐性を扱うすべての映像作品に言えることです。
日本では議論を呼んでいると思いますが、日本での上映実現を強く望みます。
I just saw the film Dead To Rights at a theatre in Richmond, BC, a movie about the 1937 Nanjing Massacre that is drawing a lot of attention in China and around the world. I was overwhelmed with emotion, like everybody else. The theatre was packed, without an empty seat, and there were many, many young people, to my pleasant surprise. A lot of people were sobbing, including myself. Today marks the 80th anniversary of Imperial Japan’s surrender to the Allied Nations. August 15, 1937, was also the beginning of the Japanese navy’s air raid on Nanjing, launched from Nagasaki, otherwise known as a victim city of a U.S. atomic bomb. This film is already stirring a lot of controversy in Japan and receiving some unfair criticism from people who have not even seen it. This film invites viewers to identify with the regular people of Nanjing, no matter what nationality they have. It will speak to the deepest part of humanity within you. It is a must-watch, and I sincerely hope it will be shown in Japan.
